SCU Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation

Project Location:  Santa Clara, CA

Client:  Santa Clara University, ZGF Architects

Description:

The state-of-the-art, 300,000 sq ft, undergraduate focused complex will allow for the integration of engineering departments with the natural science disciplines of the College of Arts and Sciences to address—with Jesuit values—some of the world’s most pressing problems.

The landscape design for the courtyards in the Sobrato Campus for Discovery and Innovation will create opportunities for students to engage in innovative, high-impact, team-based projects. The Sobrato Campus will promote cross-disciplinary undergraduate teaching, research, and initiatives in areas such as neuroscience, bioengineering, sustainability, and environmental science.

The interior “maker space” glass court will open directly onto the central courtyard where student projects can be completed and displayed. The courtyard allows for different size classes to meet simultaneously, providing varied study environments shaded by a canopy of Canary Island Palms. The courtyard has multiple connections to the main campus pedestrian spaces which were also designed by our firm.
