Cupertino Veterans Memorial

Cupertino, California

Completed 2007

A low sweeping “Wall of Honor” flanks the bronze statue bearing the names of local veterans who have died in military service. The wall fits into the existing mounded landscape at Memorial Park. A “Walk of Remembrance” carries visitors through the monument. A pavers program offers anyone the opportunity to purchase a paver to honor those serving in the military past or present and to assist with the citizen sponsored fund raising effort to pay for the memorial.

The design for the Veterans Memorial at Memorial Park centers on bronze sculptures of two U.S. Navy SEALS poised for combat. The slightly larger then life size statues are made in the likeness of Matthew Axelson, a Cupertino native and his comrade James Shu of Benicia who died in Operation Redbird in Afghanistan. Their story was chronicled in the book “Lone Survivor”. Nineteen Red Maples will create a forested feeling to the site and also serve to represent the 19 SEALS whose lives were lost in Operation Redbird.

Our office participated in the selection of the site with volunteers from the community. In view of what we thought a great project with a noble cause, we also donated all of our design services.
